How it all started

Rohit Jain gives feedback about an early version of Avaz (June 2009)

In 2005, IIT Madras and Vidya Sagar (formerly the Spastics Society of India Chennai) co-hosted a unique kind of conference, called Silent Revolution. Its aim was to bring together experts in disability and engineering to brainstorm about creating indigenous assistive technologies, which were almost entirely absent from the Indian context.

A number of interesting ideas were discussed, and two which were identified for prototyping were ADITI – a non-contact switch for people with physical disabilities to interact with electronic gadgets, and KAVI – an Augmentative and Alternative Communication device. Work on building prototypes of these gadgets began in IIT Madras.

How Invention Labs got involved
rohit

In 2007, a group of IIT Madras alumni came back to India and got together to start Invention Labs - a company focused on making inventions that were particularly relevant in the Indian context. Our association with IIT Madras led us to start visiting Vidya Sagar, who requested us to take the KAVI concept and make a product out of it. Thus began a 2-year expedition of discovery for the Invention Labs team. Starting with a clean slate, we started working closely with a group of students and teachers at Vidya Sagar toarrive at the specifications of a useful communication aid. We made a number of prototypes of the device, which were shown to the children at Vidya Sagar for feedback.

We made slow but steady progress, and by the time we had made our fifth prototype, the device was looking promising enough to launch. We decided to give the device the name “Avaz”, and we launched the first version as Avaz Beta.

Awards and Recognitions
rohit

In December 2010, we received a very exciting piece of news. Apparently, a number of our customers had written in our name as a nomination to the Government of India. And on International Day for People with Disabilities, December 3rd, Avaz - and Invention Labs - were awarded the National Award for Empowerment of People with Disabilities. We were very proud to have been awarded our country's highest recognition for work in this sector, and we had the opportunity to receive our award from Her Excellency Prathiba Patil, the President of India. It was an occasion that we never expected even in our wildest dreams! In March 2011, we received another pleasant surprise. Some people from IIT Madras had nominated us for an award given out by MIT Technology Review.

MIT Tech Review, brought out by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is the oldest technology magazine in the world. We heard from them in the beginning of March, and they told us that not only had we made it to their list of top innovations in India in 2011, but we had been named Innovator of the Year! It was a genuinely proud moment for us, to receive this recognition from our fellow engineers and inventors.

The Road Ahead

We also receive suggestions and feedback everyday from our users, and our research into improving Avaz continues. Our team has grown, and so has our resolve to make the best AAC device in the world. We’re now working with learning disabilities, and we’re putting in a bunch of other features to make Avaz even better. Stay tuned for more updates!
